How Often Should You Descale a De'Longhi Coffee Machine?

It's the question we get asked more than any other, and the honest answer is that "every three months" is a guess dressed up as advice. Two identical machines — one in Exeter, one in Chelmsford — will need descaling on completely different schedules, because the water going into them is completely different. Get the interval right and your machine will pull the same shot in year five as it did in week one. Get it wrong in either direction and you'll notice.

Here's how to work out the right frequency for your kitchen, how to run the cycle so it actually does something, and the mistakes that quietly waste your time.

Why there isn't one universal answer

Limescale forms when hard water is heated. Every time your machine pushes water through its boiler or thermoblock, a microscopically thin layer of calcium and magnesium carbonate is left behind on the heating element and inside the pipework. It builds in layers, like a kettle furring up — except you can't see it, and unlike a kettle, the deposits also narrow valves and flow paths that need to be precise.

Two things drive the rate of build-up:

  • How hard your water is. This varies enormously across the UK. Broadly, the south and east of England sit at the hard end, the south-west, Wales, the north-west and much of Scotland tend to be softer, and there's plenty of variation within regions.
  • How much water you put through the machine. Scale accumulates per litre heated, not per day on the calendar. A household pulling two espressos a day and one doing eight long blacks plus milk drinks are on wildly different timelines.

That's why a fixed calendar reminder either leaves scale sitting in the boiler for months, or has you running acid through a machine that didn't need it.

Step one: find out how hard your water actually is

You have three options, in ascending order of usefulness:

  1. Your water supplier's website. Nearly every UK supplier has a postcode lookup that gives your hardness figure, usually in mg/l of calcium carbonate or in degrees Clark. Free, and takes thirty seconds.
  2. The test strip that came with your machine. Most De'Longhi bean-to-cup machines ship with one. Dip it in cold tap water, count the squares that change colour, and enter the result in the machine's water hardness setting.
  3. Both. The supplier figure tells you the area average; the strip tells you what's coming out of your tap after the plumbing has had its say.

As a rough classification, water below around 100 mg/l calcium carbonate is considered soft, and above roughly 200 mg/l is hard. If you're in the hard bracket, you'll already know — kettle furring, spotty glassware, shower screen deposits.

A realistic descaling schedule

Set your machine's hardness level correctly and it will count litres and prompt you at the right point. If you want a working guide to plan around, this is where most households land:

  • Soft water, light use (1–2 drinks a day): roughly every three to four months.
  • Soft to moderate water, moderate use (3–5 drinks a day): roughly every two to three months.
  • Hard water, moderate use: roughly every six to eight weeks.
  • Hard water, heavy use (six or more drinks a day, or lots of long coffees and hot water): as often as every four to six weeks.

Note how much of the difference comes down to long drinks. An 80ml espresso uses a fraction of the water of a 250ml Americano, so two households drinking "four coffees a day" can be a full litre apart.

What the descale alert really means

When the light or on-screen prompt appears, your machine has counted the volume of water it has heated and reached the threshold for your hardness setting. It hasn't detected scale — it has estimated it. Two consequences follow:

First, if the hardness setting is wrong, the prompt is wrong. A machine set to "soft" in a hard-water postcode will let far too much water through before it asks. This is the single most common reason a well-cared-for machine ends up furred.

Second, the prompt is not a suggestion to get round to at the weekend after next. Many machines will progressively restrict functions until the cycle is completed, and every extra litre you push through in the meantime adds to the deposit you're about to try to dissolve.

Signs you've left it too long

Scale rarely announces itself with a fault code. It degrades performance slowly enough that you adjust to it without noticing. Watch for:

  • Coffee that isn't as hot as it was. Scale is a thermal insulator sitting between the element and the water.
  • Slower brewing, or a noisier pump. Narrowed pathways mean the pump works harder for less flow.
  • Thin, pale crema and a flatter, weaker cup even though the beans and grind haven't changed.
  • Poor milk texture — steam pressure drops as the boiler struggles.
  • Cloudy or gritty residue in the drip tray or water tank.

How to run the cycle so it actually works

  1. Empty the drip tray and grounds container first. A descale cycle dispenses a surprising volume of liquid and an overflowing tray mid-cycle is a genuine mess.
  2. Remove the water filter from the tank. A filter left in place will absorb the descaling solution and skew the whole process.
  3. Mix the solution in the tank at the dilution stated on the bottle and in your machine's manual, then top up with fresh cold water as instructed.
  4. Place a large container under the outlets — bigger than you think, covering both the coffee spout and the steam wand or milk carafe outlet.
  5. Start the cycle and let it finish. It will pause, dispense in stages and may take 25 to 45 minutes depending on the machine. Interrupting it leaves acid sitting in the boiler.
  6. Run every rinse cycle the machine asks for, with the tank rinsed out and refilled with clean water. This is the step people cut short, and it's the reason a first coffee after descaling sometimes tastes odd.
  7. Refit a fresh water filter and discard the first drink afterwards.

The mistakes that undo the whole job

Frequently asked questions

Can I still use my machine when the descale light comes on?

Usually yes, for a short while — but you're heating more hard water over deposits that are already forming, and many machines will start limiting functions until the cycle is run. Treat the prompt as a job for this week rather than this month.

Does using bottled or filtered water mean I never have to descale?

No. Most bottled still water contains dissolved minerals, and some brands are harder than tap water in soft-water areas. Filtration reduces build-up rather than preventing it, so keep descaling — just at a longer interval.

My machine is brand new. When should the first descale be?

Set the water hardness during initial setup and wait for the machine's own prompt. That first interval is your best real-world indicator of how quickly your water scales the machine, and you can plan every subsequent cycle around it.
